Delay

Hi guys. I know I'd been posting sketches and doodles lately. It's about time to post something fresh and colorful (I mean the finished artworks), but when I really wanted to do that, my laptop has broken. It's nothing serious, but it means I have to delay scanning which means to delay editing which means to delay uploading. It doesn't mean I have uploading schedule though... ^^; So I guess I will post sketches and doodles again for this moment.

Meeting

Have you experienced a memorable meeting? A memorable one, even though it sounds romantic, is not always what you want. Sometimes it gives us awkwardness, sadness, and even anger. Or maybe you had a meeting that trapped you in an intersection between love and hate? That's okay, I guess. It's nice to have feelings.

Mainstream - First Comic on Blog!

This is the first comic I upload here. It's nothing serious except I want to try to make one episode of strip comic just to know how far I can bear the progress. And it's.... somewhere between fun and frown.

I had an experience of making comic. Around 2002 when I was 11 year-old, I made a comic "book" (I bound it myself) under the theme magical girl and contain about twenty pages. But I thought it sucked so I threw it to the trash bin right away.

Stupid.

Don't even ask me the title, it still sucks anyway.

Allium: Sativum

Previously...

Here in Indonesia, there is a famous folktale involving red onion and garlic. It's about a protagonist girl named Bawang Putih (garlic) and her evil stepsister Bawang Merah (red onion). Generally, the story is similar with Cinderella, where the protagonist is tortured and is helped by magical power forms. Maybe there are many cases like them in real life back in the past? I hope not.

This time I post the main protagonist, Allium sativum; Allium: Sativum; Bawang Putih. I drew her with all those innocence and a little brave in her. I was indecisive with the main color to use here. It was between green and yellow but at the last minutes I chose blue instead. ^^; By the way, the puffy skirt resembles garlic's shape.

The story of Bawang Merah and Bawang Putih was not my favorite, to be honest, same with my opinion to Cinderella. Not in the bad way, though. Allium series started with accidental doodles that developed to something bigger. What I like here is how I make their toes since I rarely do it. It is nice to develop!

Some Pieces

These are some pieces I need to put my hands on. がんばります!

Allium: Cepa

Hello! After a long August plus two weeks of early September, finally I got to get my laptop and scanner to edit and finish some pieces. Let me start my comeback with series Allium. This series contains two artworks, they are Cepa and Sativum. You might be have known where the inspiration comes from. Yup, red onion and garlic.

I hope not.

In Allium: Cepa I use striking red that is far from the common red onion's color. The kind of red that is always great to play our emotion. The kind of red that is suitable for a tough-looking girl, yet also keeps her insecurities. Tough-looking girl is my favorite, unless she's evil. :/

Guess Who

Guess Who is created based on previous doodle in this post. I imagine this scene happens at a pizza restaurant at evening. Accidental meeting. Long-lost friend... or ex-crush. An apology. Awkwardness. Yet it would be a night they can't forget. They can't tell anyone so they keep it for themselves.

Gosh it's so cheesy. What's more cheesy than mozzarella on a pizza's top? This story is.

My Sister and Her Hero

Trust me, this lovey-dovey-looking piece is inspired by a comedic incident I had seen in real life hahahah. And it was not romantic at all.

It started with Mbak Arum, a great person I mentioned here. She had a best friend, a male, who was frequently 'annoyed' by her in a cute way. Seeing them together is like reading a manga where an energetic girl and a tough boy are in. >w<

They were not romantically involved, but they had a good relationship each other. I even thought he was younger than Mbak Arum because he looked like acting as a younger brother hahahah.

Coloring this piece was a bit challenging because I wanted it to show romance-comedy nuance, yet at the same time I was afraid this was unfortunately overcome by previous piece, Sisters, where gloomy orange dominates and warm clothes were on. But I imagined a sunny morning here so I forgave myself. ^o^;

Do you see that young girl behind the wall? When I was coloring her I remembered a pile of thick whipped cream on top of cupcake. I still don't know why it happens.

Dancing Feet

Dancing Feet was a doodle inspired by Sailor Venus' shoes. In its debut manga and Sailor Moon manga, Sailor V has curvy skinny extremities and she is loyal to use ankle strap yellow heels. I can't draw that super skinny legs *laugh*.

When it came to coloring, I stayed spontaneous on this doodle. I did not have a clear color prescription except yellow for shoes. Usually I have three colors at minimum to color my creations; they can be each for figure's physical tone, outfits, and background, or concentrated on outfits/background/physical tone only. But since it was only a doodle, I did not push myself to decide.

The fishnet here is red only for variation. Of course when it was only a messy doodle, the fishnet was black and the legs were straight white, then I thought it would be a waste to have it colored as common as "black fishnet meets skin tone", so I put a stocking behind those fishnet.

Background coloring was fun. I had played with bright colors these day, so this time I used dark colors. And to highlight the happiness feel from this doodle, I added bright accents which were contrary to the dark background.

Spontaneous doodle goes well with spontaneous coloring!

Stretching

I am sorry for posting such unclean piece. This is another doodle I made on a paper. Somehow I think this is somewhat influenced by Zara Larsson on her video Lush Life. Maybe it is because I was listening/ watching it while doodling.

To make anatomical figures is hard to me. I can make ordinary-posed figures like there is no contracted muscle, but I can not make them in full contracted body (I don't think it was a right term hahah). Take athletic poses for example. In stretching, abdominal muscle usually become longer, right? At the same time, back muscle bends so it looks shorter. It depends on your stretching position, of course. I need to learn this carefully so that I can make more poses on my figures easier in the future.

Purpose (colored)

As you can see, this is the colored version a doodle I posted previously. I'm quite satisfied with the color; I was honestly affected by the camera's filter I used when I took the pic of the doodle. Turquoise.

The background story of this piece had been mentioned before. It was silly if I think of it nowadays. =_= But I'm sure in our very brains, there are soft spots for questioning mermaid's existence.

I color my mermaid in green-ish skin and scales with silk-like fins and tail. I tried my best to make adorable hair to her. Cool colors dominate here, but I couldn't find more suitable color than color coral for her lips.

Sorry for the outstanding text on the rocks. I did not intend to make it that way.

Searching Melody

Ideas can come spontaneously, but when you are purposely looking for an idea, you brainstorm. Brainstorming almost always goes bad in me (duh), but after it builds up from zero to something, we can't stop.

This artwork reflects brainstorming at its best. Whatever kind of ideas you are looking for, if you have find the start point of your idea, you can't stop. You get immersed in it in no time. You want to do whatever you can to capture and keep it. You probably hear some people say "you and your world" to you, that is what you look like when you brainstorming.

Cakes and Chats

Phew!

What a sweet, sweet reunion with my scanner and laptop. I'd been away for about three weeks and finally I got a chance to edit something.

This artwork was totally inspired by my appointment with my friend Sitha to meet up and eat cake in a cozy cafe. That sounds too cute, I know. But that was what we arranged. The cake day was later happened few days later.

While I'm having empty days between arranging appointment and D-day (actually it was NOT empty at all, I was just not having particular event except working and working), my childhood friend Damar held an art exhibition. Her pieces are totally cute and fantasies! At the end of her exhibition week, they held a drawing class for free and I joined it to make this piece. I got my feet on the ground and my head was high in the clouds that day. ^w^

A week later was my and Sitha's day to eat cake. I had two great weekends that month.

Goddess

It is rare to me to create an upside down piece like Goddess. I found specific challenges here especially that I have to keep in mind that my object's feet are against gravity. In Goddess case, my object's hair too. I think I should make more like this in the future.

What I Feel When I Wash My Face

Lately I use a very bubbly face wash. It is liquid, not too thick, in a bottle with a twist-and-pump cap (I don't know how to call it). Before I used it, I usually use gel type or a thicker type of face wash. The thicker type is usually contains scrub and a little more solid.

This liquid face wash is more bubbly than foamy. It can be foamy though, but I'm too lazy to whip it more until it turns to foam. When I apply it to my face, I imagine my face drowns deep in the bubbles, if only the bubbles don't hurt my opened eyes. Then the bubbles spread wider and wider until it turns to an unlimited cloud of bubbles. And my face is the only one left to see.

Sometimes I'm worry if I pump this liquid soap too much...

A Person with Earphone

This is an undated doodle. I found it between scratches (I mean a swarm of doodles) at a corner of a piece of paper. I think the last time I draw a person with earphone was... five, six years ago? That time I really liked using earphone. But I changed to a earphone-less person. Not that I disliked earphone, no. It's just a change.

To draw a person with earphone is nostalgic because I used to do it in the past and now I had never draw it as a 'proper' artwork. When it is drawn as a sudden doodle, it feels like my muscular memory works as its deepest desire comes to surface.

Erres (Colored)

As you can see, this is the colored version of my previous post. I wish Erres will like it. ^w^

Erres

Hi! I'm typing this in my work hour. It's been a long time since I launched previous post, hasn't it?

Erres is my childhood friend before I moved to this big city. She is still my friend, though, but of course we are in different situation. Plus, we often communicate online rather than face-to-face.

She asked me to make a drawing. Just a quick sketch like snap snap then she would upload it in her Line timeline. So I made this. This is her the last time we met (that's years ago). She had a very long curly hair. It's brown-ish too.

I will color this sketch soon.

Counting Stars

I really enjoyed coloring this piece! Especially when it came to finishing, where I had to adjust the colors to resemble midnight and a sky full of stars. The hardest part was drawing those bicycles; I needed to check the internet for references.

This is a request from my Facebook friend Putut Suryo Jati who likes bicycling so much. I hope you'll like it!

King and Queen

King and Queen is dedicated to my campus friend Mel. I've made some artworks to her few times before, but this time is the most precious one for her because it is for her first wedding anniversary. Plus, she has a child now. *applause* Congratulations, Mel!

We Don't Talk Anymore

Okay, this doodle is clearly inspired by Charlie Puth's We Don't Talk Anymore. The song is somewhat hurting some hearts, am I right? The hook part is just perfect, it's the very point that makes me love this song currently.

I keep this doodle uncleared because, if you see it closely, you can find some repeating lyrics written in it just like when I hit replay button on Youtube to listen to it again and again. I bet some people brought up their old bitter memories to the surface. Or was it just me?

Gadis Senja

Zahra a.k.a Aya asked me to draw this for her, with the words and 'identities' which means my social media accounts' names. I'm glad I can finish this. It's kinda new to me to color a sky of twilight. Oh, by the way, Gadis Senja means Dusk Girl.

Family Picnic

This piece is made for my old friend Nia. She went to the same junior high with me but we weren't so close that time. After we went to the same university and same classroom (which means same concentration), we went well and always spent the time together until she was graduated earlier than me. Now she has a husband and a cute son.

Honestly I can't think of suitable colors for this piece. I always remember Nia's dark navy blue sweater which was my favorite. She looks independent and strong with that color. She looks good in red too, but it's like adding fuel to flame. ^^: She has a taste of anak gaul and definitely not suitable in pink. After some consideration, I chose this bright-sky blue combined with sunny yellow. Then I added the green leaves to fill the blank space. I hope you'll like it, Nia! Thanks for requesting! :D

p.s: solar eclipse seen in Indonesia today!

Lead Singer

This piece is dedicated to my campus friend Dave. Yes, he is the same Dave with whom from previous post. When we were at campus we had a gig at a campus event where he was the singer and I was the bass player. We performed together with a drummer and a guitarist. I was going to make him as a guitarist here, but considering my previous pieces which were contained some guitarists, I changed the plan and made him a singer instead. He looks like a Grammy performer here. XD

Warm Winter

Such old, old request came from my campus friend Dave. I have to apologize to him for taking one eternity just to make this piece. Sorry, Dave... ^^;

Dave is a funny guy everyone likes to be friend with. But when it come to relationship, he shows his other side only to his girlfriend. I never know what kind of side it is lol.

Thanks for requesting and waiting even after we had graduated and separated, Dave!

Invited As A Guest Illustrator!

Helloooo I'm really sorry for the lack of update! There were so many things I did this month and I almost had no time to fill up this blog.

At Feb 19 I was invited to Tumbuh Primary, Yogyakarta (Indonesia), to teach the students of Upper Class (grade 5 and 6) how to draw persons easily. In other words: in my way. It was my very first time being invited and feel such nuance, you know, elite school; teaching in english and bahasa; be a more important person; and moreover, I met my junior high old friend! She works there and she's the very person who invited me first. It's all because of her. :D

Here are some pictures from that day.

That's fatty me :v

The kids were so interactive!

Feast lol. As an Indonesian I only know some of their names even though they are easily found at markets. Combro, risoles mayo, kue ku, I think up there is mini pizza, something like kue lumpur, and that pink one looks like pudding with mutiara inside.

This is my junior-high friend. The kids said that we look similar because of our glasses.

Of course there were some bonus artworks! This one is for my friend, and I made the other two for a boy and a girl but I forgot to take pics of them ^^;
That is all what happened that day. It added one more big history to my life!

Bear Plays with Rain Happily

It was a day where dark clouds gathered when a single bear wandered alone. She had done hardworking and planned nothing for the rest of the day. But before she went home, just at the end of the day before the sun set she found a happiness herself. That was when the first drop of rain fell upon her. She stopped her trip and dance, dance, until she forgot that she should had nothing to do for the rest of the day.

Learning

A friend of a friend asked me to draw him something based on his self picture. In that picture he is playing his guitar while sitting on the floor, and he asked me to change it to sitting on a chair. So I made him this. Thanks for requesting! ^_^

Flower Day

It was around six months ago when my campus friend Dey asked me to draw her something, before I totally forgot it. Sorry, Dey... *bow*

Dey is a nice girl who loves flowers. Whenever we go to graduations, she has her own taste in bouquets as gifts to her graduating friends (sometimes I'm sure she keeps ones for herself, hahah). It's a common thing here to give flowers to those who are graduated. Also, I don't know much about this but she has this hint of liking Japan. Especially on Japan's sakura trees. Then I remembered my campus trip to Kebun Raya Cibodas (Cibodas Botanical Garden) years ago where I found some sakura trees there, and that became my inspiration in making this. I hope you'll like it, Dey!

Trivia: I had been told that Cibodas' sakura trees bloom twice a year.

UPDATE! (24 April 2016)
I just realized that I had created an artwork with same title and both of these are requested pieces. ^^;

Spring (Colored)

I heard that spring comes after winter, brings flowers and leaves along with winter's leftover breeze. She wakes bears and squirrels gently as she spreads a faint scent of buds. Slowly she warms up the world.

I have never experienced spring since I live in a two-seasoned country. We always have dry and wet season so I never fully understand what spring is. Nevertheless, I like the idea of spring, especially at how it becomes inspiration in fashion. Spring fashion trends usually are colorful, right?

This doodle is the same thing from my previous, previous post. At that time I had no idea of which colors I should use, but the word 'spring' itself helped me to choose. The early spring, based on books and movies I consumed, gives me a sense of pale colors, like pink-rose buds that aren't big enough to be seen, or like the colors of grass between melting snow. Oh, how I miss spring before I know her.
